About the Web Sharing Chooser Extension, version 1.0
The Web Sharing Chooser Extension is a product from Open Door Networks Inc. which allows you to locate personal Web servers on your organization's AppleTalk network using the Chooser, and to view a server's home page, through your Web browser, simply by double-clicking the server's name. The Extension lets you browse for servers you may not know about, and eliminates the need to remember and type in long, cryptic URLs.
Since the Chooser uses AppleTalk to locate devices, only Web servers on AppleTalk can be located using the Chooser Extension. Additionally, for the time being, only Web servers running Open Door's Personal LogDoor product can be found using the Chooser Extension. In the future, Open Door intends to make it possible to locate other Web servers as well.
Installing the Web Sharing Chooser Extension
The Web Sharing Chooser Extension is licensed for use on a certain number of machines. Consult the license agreement you received with the Extension to determine the maximum number of machines onto which it may be installed. If you are using the evaluation version of the Extension included with Personal LogDoor, you may install that Extension on no more than one machine for each licensed copy of Personal LogDoor you have purchased, and you may only evaluate the software for 30 days. If you have not purchased Personal LogDoor, but are only evaluating it, you may install the Extension on only one machine total on your network.
To install the Extension, simply drag a copy of it into your System folder. The Extension will automatically be placed in the extensions folder within the System folder. You must restart your Macintosh after installing the Extension.
Configuring the Web Sharing Chooser Extension
The Web Sharing Chooser Extension needs to know what Web browser to use to display server home pages. If you have Internet Config installed and configured to indicate a preferred Web browser (under the http helpers option), the Extension will automatically use that browser. Otherwise, the Extension will search for a Web browser, and use the first one it finds. If you wish to override this behavior and indicate a specific browser you may do so. Select the Chooser from your Apple menu, click on the Web Sharing icon and then click on the Setup button. When the browser selection dialog is displayed, click the "Select" button and indicate a particular browser. The indicated browser will be used from then on. You can switch back to Internet Config later if desired.
Using the Web Sharing Chooser Extension
To use the Extension, be sure your Macintosh is on an AppleTalk network and that AppleTalk is enabled. Select the Chooser from your Apple menu, and click on the Web Sharing icon. If the Chooser displays a zone list, you should also select the AppleTalk zone in which you want to look for Web servers. After clicking the Web Sharing icon and selecting the zone, you should see a list of Web servers in the selected zone. Simply select the desired Web server and hit the "OK" button, or double-click the desired server. The Extension should launch the configured Web browser if that browser's not already running, and tell the browser to display the home page of the server. The whole process may take a few seconds.
Troubleshooting the Web Sharing Chooser Extension
If no Web servers show up in the Chooser list, it may be due to one of the following reasons:
• There may be no Web servers running Personal LogDoor in the selected AppleTalk zone.
• Your Macintosh may not be on an AppleTalk network.
• You may not have restarted your Macintosh after installing the Extension.
If a particular Web server does not show up in the Chooser list, it may be due to one of the following reasons:
• The server is not running Personal LogDoor, or AppleTalk registration has not been selected in the Personal LogDoor's monitor menu, or AppleTalk registration was unsuccessful.
• The server is not on an AppleTalk network, or not in the AppleTalk zone in which you're currently looking.
• The server is no longer running.
• The server is on the same Macintosh as the Chooser. The Chooser can not see devices on the Macintosh on which it is running.
